MPS URGING GOOGLE TO CUT GAMBLING REVENUE STREAM
British Labour MP, Kahlid Mahmood, has spearheaded
a motion to coerce Google into not accepting advertising money from
land based and online gambling groups.
Google has recently publicised their decision to
reintroduce online gambling advertisements, an action which has
approximately 40 UK MP’s and the Church of England up in arms.
According to the statement released by the concerned parties, “Google
risks normalizing gambling in society… (we call upon) Google
to review its policy in line with its own obligations on corporate
social responsibility”. It is speculated the Google stands
to generate roughly £100 to £300 million by allowing
these adverts to run.
Google UK spokesperson, James Cashmore, has
commented that Google believes that placing gambling adverts in
Great Britain’s version of the search engine is in line with
local business and industry practices. As a precautionary measure,
the company has taken care to ensure that only those gambling groups
that are licensed will be able to advertise and the adverts will
also be classified as being “unsuitable for family use”.
