GAMBLING COMMUNITY GIVES BACK

CSI projects have become a big part of gambling operations in South Africa. Casino Association of South Africa Chairman, Mr. David Coutts-Trotter, has been quoted as saying that “The gambling industry can confidently be proud of the extent to which it has contributed to the material welfare of the communities within which it operates.”

This contribution is in the form of donations to charities, the building of infrastructure and the creation of employments. Examples include Peermont, who invests over R22 million a year to various education, skills development and community partnerships. Gold Reef Resorts funds a museum and has renovated the SANCA offices in the Free State. Tsogo Sun has allocated R11 million to welfare projects aimed at improving the lives of children and is an avid member of Business Against Crime. They also support various sporting initiatives.

Sun International reports budget spend of 2% of the company’s net profits which is ploughed into education, welfare, sports, arts and culture and community development. Century Casinos Africa assisted with the relocation of the community radio station in Newcastle to new premises within the casino precinct.
