SUN INTERNATIONAL IN FRACAS WITH KING

Mpondo’s King Mpondombini Sigcau is taking on Sun International in their bid to renew their license for the Wild Coast Sun.
The international conglomerate has been paying the government R5 000 a month for use of the 640 hectare property on the east coast. The king has lodged a formal objection to the hotel group’s license renewal application, stating that the rental amount is far from sufficient and that various financial promises have not been met. These included projects to uplift the poverty stricken areas of Port Edward, Mount Ayliff and Lusikisiki.
The license application will appear before the Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting Board on Wednesday and the renewal document is said to include a R340 million upgrade proposal for the casino and the resort. The original lease document was agreed upon in 1979 and was ratified by the then Transkei homeland government.
